Almond Cookies

Ingredients
- 3 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 1/3 cup shortening
- red food coloring, optional
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Sift flour, soda, salt.
- Beat eggs with fork. Add extract.
- Cream sugar with shortening; add egg; mix thoroughly.
- Add dry ingredients gradually.
- Roll into balls 1" in diameter. Place 1" apart on greased cookie sheet.
- Press thumb gently in center of top of each ball.
- Touch depression with red coloring.
- Bake 12 minutes at 350 degrees.

Hello Chef 14498, Thanks for stopping by. Sorry for the mishap with this recipe, I added the 1/4 teaspoon it's supposed to have. And that should do it!

for the almond cookie, you say sift together the flour, soda and salt, however; you don't have salt listed..I am about to make them for the first time and going to add a dash...it would be nice though, to know the exact amount to be used.

Thanks for the great question! I did a little research and it seems that it's really a matter of personal preference. It's all kind of the same thing in the end. So use whatever is on hand or try different things out and see how you like it. As long as what you're using is "shortening", you'll be good.

When the recipe calls for "shortening," do you mean liquid vegetable oil, Crisco canned shortening or oleo/butter? It sure would make things easier for beginners if people would specify what they mean by "shortening" when they submit recipes! Thanks! HanginginSF
