The Shining, 1980

The Gold Room

Champagne. Cinnamon. Classy and Bubbly.

Step off the elevator and into the opulence of The Gold Room with this luxurious concoction, a drink that’s as mysterious and refined as the iconic hotel bar it’s named after. With the golden flakes of Goldschläger swirling around like the ghosts of the Overlook Hotel, this cocktail offers a sip of decadence, echoing bygone soirees that never truly end. The orange liqueur and prosecco bring a bubbly zest, perfect for toasting the July 4th Ball, 1921. This elegant drink will slip into your life like a long forgotten classic, because . . . you’ve always been drinking it.

Movie Morsel: In the book, the haunted room was 217, inspired by Stephen King’s stay at the Stanley Hotel’s Room 217 (now known as “The Stephen King Suite”). However, at the request of the Timberline Lodge in Oregon (which served as the hotel’s exterior for the film), Kubrick changed it in the film to Room 237, as the hotel feared they’d have trouble booking the suite. Ironically, Room 217 is now one of Timberline Lodge’s most popular room requests.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce [30 ml] Goldschläger
  • 1/2 ounce [15 ml] Cointreau™
  • 3 ounce [90 ml] prosecco
  • An orange twist, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a mixing glass, combine the Goldschläger and Cointreau. Stir gently over ice, giving those gold flakes a twirl on the dance floor.

  2. Strain the mixture into a classic coupe glass and top off with the prosecco, letting the bubbles rise like the terror in Room 237.

  3. Garnish with an orange twist, giving it a final touch of Overlook elegance. Cheers!
