Spam Musobi

Ingredients

  • What works best in sushi is Japanese short grain rice. It's stickier
  • and has a great flavor. I use a rice cooker, personally. I was
  • always against it, wanting to cook my rice in a pot, until my fiance
  • bought a rice cooker for us. Now I can't see life without it.
  • The rice can be specially cooked with a vinegar/water solution.
  • I have done that and just cooked the rice normally. Now, there
  • are several ways of making the musobi. First off, the spam (I use
  • the less salt version) is sliced into 1/4 inch slabs. This is
  • fried in a pan (can use spray pam if you want, but the spam has
  • plenty of grease to keep it from sticking).

Instructions

If you want rolled sushi style spam, then the cooked spam is sliced into long strips. Otherwise, there is a mold you can get in any Asian food market and the spam can be cut to size for that (usually a rectangular mold). My fiance likes his musobi with the rice molded in the rectangular mold and a slab of spam on top. From there I wrap a strip of the nori (seaweed) around the middle (width wise) of the musobi. Otherwise, you can put it in a roll with cucumbers, green onions and rice (my favorite).
