Ingredients
- 1 package condensed French onion soup mix
- 1 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup dried bread crumbs
- 1 egg
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 (1-pound) bag frozen hash browns, thawed
- 1 onion, roughly chopped
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened
- 2 tablespoon heavy cream
Don't Forget to Thaw Your Hash Browns!
Thawing out frozen ingredients before cooking allows you to remove the excess moisture. This is especially important when you are making a layered casserole.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Set aside.

In a bowl, mix together half of the soup mix with the beef, bread crumbs, egg, salt, and pepper.

Shape into 6 oval patties.

Brown patties on both sides in a skillet over medium-high heat. Set patties aside. Pour off and discard any excess fat.

In the same pan, mix the remaining soup mix together with the ketchup, mustard, water, and Worcestershire sauce. Add the butter and whisk until melted and smooth.

Reduce the heat to low and whisk in the heavy cream.

Spread the hash browns over the bottom of the baking dish. Top with the chopped onion. Arrange the browned meat patties over the potatoes.

Pour sauce over the patties.

Bake for 30-40 minutes until the potatoes are golden and the sauce is bubbly. Serve immediately.
Why is it called Salisbury Steak?
Salisbury steak (originally a mix of beef and pork) was popularized way back in the late 1800s. Dr. Salisbury who mentioned it in his book, The Relation of Alimentation and Disease, as a cure for stomach issues and overall health. He also suggested people avoid eating fruits! While this Civil War science is certainly not something to follow today, the recipe is actually pretty tasty. After it's popularity way back in the day, Salisbury steak found new fame and popularity as a TV dinner in the 1970s.
