Cheesy Cabbage Casserole

- 2 cup medium heads of cabbage, chopped
- 2 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 12 slices of American cheese
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Fill a large pot half-full with water. Bring to a boil. Add a dash or two of salt. Add cabbage and cook for 2 minutes; drain and return cabbage to pan.

Cook and brown ground beef with chopped onions. When done set aside.

Melt butter in a sauce pan, then add flour, salt and pepper, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in milk. Stir on medium heat until thickened creating a white sauce.

Layer cabbage in bottom of the prepared baking dish with some ground beef. Pour 1/3 of white sauce over cabbage and ground beef. Arrange six slices of cheese on that. Repeat, ending with white sauce.
- Pour into a casserole dish. Top with remaining cheese and bread crumbs. Dot with butter (optional). Bake for 35 minutes or until bubbly and brown.
