Burnt Sugar Cake with Burnt Sugar Frosting
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1 1/2 cup sugar
- 2/3 cup butter
- 2 beaten egg whites
- 1 cup cold water
- 3 cups flour, or 2 1/2 if using a mixer
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup cream
- 1 Tsp salt
Instructions
Burn 1/2 C sugar in skillet, stir constantly. Add boiling water (SLOWLY) and boil to a syrup, then set aside. Cream sugar and butter; add cold water and beat thoroughly. Add flour and baking soda and mix. Add sugar syrup and beat. Fold in beaten, but not dry egg whites and vanilla. Mix well and pour into (greased and floured) cake pans. Bake 350F preheated oven for 30-40 minutes. Mix sugar and cream in skillet and cook to a caramel consistency. Add salt and beat to a beautiful caramel.
