Classic Bread Pudding

Cooking Time1 hr 15 min

Ingredients

  • 4 cup milk
  • 2 1/2 cup soft bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs, separate whites from yolk and keep both
  • 2 tablespoon soft butter
  • 1 lemon, for juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raspberry jelly or jam
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
     
  2. In 8-cup baking dish, mix together milk and bread crumbs.
     
  3. Add 1/2 cup sugar, beaten egg yolks, butter, lemon juice and nutmeg; mix thoroughly.
     
  4. Bake in for 1 hour. Remove from oven and spread top of pudding with jelly or jam.
     
  5. In a separate bowl beat the egg whites to soft peaks; gradually add remaining sugar, beating constantly to stiff peaks.
     
  6. Spread meringue over jelly. Return dish to oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes.
