Slow cookers are wonderful kitchen appliances that help busy cooks every day. The Set 'n Forget 6 Qt. Programmable Slow Cooker from Hamilton Beach is an excellent model that we had the pleasure of reviewing in our test kitchen. Valued at $59.99, this slow cooker would be a welcomed appliance in any kitchen.
The biggest feature that stood out to me was its programming capabilities. The great thing about slow cookers is that you can let dinner cook while you are away. But what if it's done before you get home? That's where the program feature really comes in handy. You can set a time on the slow cooker so that it knows to switch to the WARM setting after a given time. Just like you wouldn't want to leave the oven on after the brownies are done baking, you wouldn't want to leave a slow cooker on HIGH for three extra hours. Not all slow cooker recipes cook for eight hours, so it's nice to have the "switch to WARM" capability.
One small yet exciting feature is the probe hole. As you know, it's not good to open up a slow cooker lid during the cooking process. It can be tempting to see the progress of the dish, but it cools the food and adds cooking time in the long run. A small hole in the lid allows you to insert a probe to check meat that's inside. This handy-dandy feature doesn't come standard on other slow cookers, so I found it rather exciting.
