Depression Era Baked Apples

During the Great Depression it was necessary to have a collection of cheap and easy recipes at your disposal. Some of those budget-friendly dishes have stood the test of time and are still just as popular today. One of those dishes is Depression Era Baked Apples. These sweet treats are simple to make and don't cost very much to prepare. When you're looking for easy dessert recipes that won't break the bank, this one is a winner!

Ingredients

  • 4 Granny Smith apples or Rome apples (any hard apple will work)
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoon orange juice
  • 3 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 pinch cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
     
  2. Mix together syrup ingredients and bring to a boil.
     
  3. Peel the apples, removing only about the top two inches. Core the apples and place them upright in a baking dish.
     
  4. Pour the syrup over and into the apples.
     
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes or until a fork pierces apple easily.
     
  6. Sprinkle tops with a little extra brown sugar if desired and broil for 3 minutes.
     
  7. Serve warm with ice cream.
