Ingredients
- 1 cup root beer
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
- 3 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 1/2 tablespoon dark brown sugar, or more to taste
- 1 tablespoon dark or light molasses
- 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder or fresh minced garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel (optional)
- 3 pound chicken parts, seasoned well with your favorite barbecue rub

For the Sauce:

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, bring to a rolling boil over medium heat, and reduce heat and simmer until reduced to 1 1/2 cups. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cool, cover and store refrigerated until use.
For the Chicken:

Place chicken and sauce in a plastic bag, refrigerate for 30 minutes or longer to marinate.
- Grill chicken parts on low heat - brushing the chicken pieces liberally as you turn them. Takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to cook done on a low heat gas grill.
