    Italian Meat Sauce

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 C. onion slices
    • 2 T. olive oil
    • 1 lb. ground beef
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 1-pound cans of whole tomatoes (4 C.)
    • 2 8-oz. cans of tomato paste
    • 1 C. water
    • 1 3-oz. can (2/3 C) broiled sliced mushrooms
    • 1/4 C. chopped parsley
    • 1 1/2 teaspoon oregano or sage
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon MSG (optional)
    • 1/4 teaspoon thyme
    • 1 bay leaf

    Instructions

    Cook onion in hot oil until golden; add meat and garlic; brown lightly. Add remaining ingredients; simmer uncovered 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until thick. Remove bay leaf before serving over spaghetti. Top with Parmesan or Romano cheese.
