    Grandma's Magic Shoofly Pie

    You can't talk about Amish recipes, especially Amish desserts, without discussing the classic shoofly pie. This recipe for Grandma's Magic Shoofly Pie is one of the best we've found and is so simple to prepare too. All you need are a few basic ingredients and just 35 short minutes in the oven and before you know it you'll have a delicious homemade pie ready to serve your loved ones. Even novice bakers will be able to easily whip up this delicious shoofly pie recipe, straight from Grandma's recipe box!

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 1 cup molasses
    • 1 egg
    • 3/4 cup cold water
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 cup boiling water
    • 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie shell

    Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
       
    2. In a small bowl, mix flour, brown sugar and butter (or margarine) together until it resembles course corn meal. Measure out 1/2 cup of the mixture and set aside for topping.
       
    3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg. Mix in molasses and cold water.
       
    4. Add crumb mixture and stir thoroughly.
       
    5. Stir baking soda into hot water, and then add to the molasses mixture. Mix well.
       
    6. Pour filling into pie crust, and evenly sprinkle the reserved topping on top.
       
    7. Bake for 35 minutes.
