Golden Cabbage
It's hard not to be a fan of easy cabbage recipes. They taste delicious, are easy to prepare, and don't cost a whole lot to make. This recipe for Golden Cabbage is one of our favorites because it features cornstarch, butter and a good dose of Swiss cheese. Anyone looking for simple side dishes for a family dinner or potluck should give this delicious dish a try!
Ingredients
- 2 pound white or green cabbage
- 2 quart water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 pound Swiss cheese, grated
Instructions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Remove and discard the core from the cabbage. Shred or chop cabbage finely.

Combine cabbage with the water, sugar and 1 1/2 tablespoons of the salt. Bring to a boil, cover and cook over low heat for 1 hour.

Remove cabbage and drain thoroughly in a colander.

Combine the milk, cornstarch, butter and remaining salt. Bring to a boil over moderate heat, stirring. Combine with drained cabbage.

Stir in all but 4 tablespoons of the grated cheese and blend well.

Pour cabbage mixture into a buttered 7 1/2 x 12-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and bake just until thoroughly heated.
- Run the dish briefly under the broiler and serve hot.
