This is such a great idea for when it gets cold out and I love that it's homemade and premeasured. Just wrap a ribbon around it and give it to everyone on your list...I mean, who doesn't love hot chocolate right? Adding instant coffee to make mocha sounds like a winner too trishclark529. I'm thinking you can probably add it to the mix when you make it up in the jar and then you'll have two different varieties on hand.

I made these for my son to take to college with him. He loves hot chocolate, and this was perfect for him. He says that it is so easy to make this on a cool night in the dorm. He loves having a warm cup of cocoa while studying. He did say that sometimes he adds some instant coffee and he has a mocha! This is a great gift idea for anyone, but it gives my son a little bit of home while away at college.

I have made these before as a gift and they are so cute! Definitely make sure the marshmallows are on the top otherwise they get discolored because of the hot chocolate packets. Just note you may also use pre-prepared hot chocolate mix but it requires about 3 packets to look substantial. About cooking, I would recommend dumping the ingredients out the jar and adding the hot liquid!

I guess I am confused. You take a 1/2 cup of the mix and put it in a mug and you don't need to add water or milk to it? Do you microwave or heat on the stove? This is a great gift idea, but I am just not understanding how to make the hot chocolate.

Yeah, I agree. I'm just now realizing there is no liquid (which makes no sense). I've already poured the ingredients into the jar...maybe look at the instant milk directions and see what it says. If it doesn't give instructions then I'll just tell the recipient to add water slowly until desired consistency is achieved?

I think from the instructions you are meant to add 8 oz of hot water or milk to 1/2 cup of the mix, so approx 1/2 cup mix for every standard size mug.

This is a great idea! These make great gifts for teachers, co-workers, Secret Santa, etc. The lids of the jars can be covered in festive Christmas fabric and tied with ribbon or twine. Add some candy canes or chocolate chips as a tasty treat!!

Love this recipe! If I attach a cute gift tag with a pretty ribbon, it's a ready-to-go gift. I like that no other ingredients are needed for the recipient to make hot chocolate. The labels that are shown above are not labels for hot chocolate, but they are super cute for other food gifts.
