Pattern Sugar Cookies

Ingredients
- 4 cups all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup solid vegetable shortening
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 eggs
- colored candies, optional
- colored sugar, optional
- favorite frosting, optional
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, stir together flour, cream of tartar and soda.
- In a large bowl, beat together butter and shortening until fluffy.
- Gradually beat in powdered sugar and extracts.
- Beat in eggs, one at a time.
- Gradually stir in the flour mixture until well blended.
- Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 4 hours.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out a portion of the dough to a 1/8 inch thickness, keeping remaining dough chilled until ready to use.
- Cut out cookies with a floured cookie cutter.
- Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased or kitchen parchment paper-covered baking sheets.
- Sprinkle with colored sugar or candies as desired or leave plain to frost.
- Bake 8 to 11 minutes or until set but not browned. Transfer to wire racks to cool.
