Candy Cane Shaped Cookies
Just in time for the holidays, we've got Candy Cane-Shaped Cookies! Liberal douses of red food coloring makes these cookies as beautifully colored as a Red Velvet Cake.

Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening (or margarine)
- 1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups gold medal wondra flour (cake flour)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- red food coloring, to taste
- granulated sugar, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Mix first 5 ingredients together.
- Sift flour and salt together. Stir 1/2 of flour mixture into shortening mixture.
- Work remaining flour into mixture with hands until the dough holds together. Divide dough in half. Mix 1/2 of dough with red food coloring.
- Pinch off a bit of white dough and roll into a long cigarette, pinch off a bit of red dough and roll into a long cigarette.
- Twist white and red dough together, place on cookie sheet and bend into a candy cane shape.
- Bake 9 minutes or until light golden. Remove from oven and dust with granulated sugar.
