Traditional South African Milk Tart
"This is a traditional South African tart. It is decadently smooth and creamy. It was brought to the country centuries ago when the dutch settlers first settled in the Cape in 1600. The large amount of milk used in this milk tart recipe is an indication that it was introduced by Dutch Dairy farmers.'Melk tert' is ubiquitous with South Africa. One finds milk tart at every festival, bazaar or church fete and in every home industry shop and flea market across the country. It is inexpensive to make, and this recipe makes two complete tarts so you can take it to a bake sale and contribute meaningfully or give one away and keep one for yourself. It goes really far and you have only used 1 ltr of milk. Go ahead, give it a go. You will thank me for it!"

This recipe sounds really interesting, but the link provided goes to a Page Not Found message on the contributor's website. If you do a search for milk tart, you're directed to the blog entry that contains the recipe. Do be aware that the ingredients are all measured in metric, so you'll need to make some conversions if you're here in the U.S. The instructions are nicely illustrated and detailed and I look forward to giving this a try.

Hi Edmund. This is my blog and thank you so much for the compliments! I have to say that this website gives me many good ideas for my recipes. I have noted your comment about the link and will work on fixing that. I have posted many recipes on here too which I have made so look out for them. Sorry about the metrics! When I post recipes for Recipe Lion I do the conversions but this came straight from the South African blog. Enjoy the tart! You won't be sorry and it is easy to make.

Milk tart is a really comforting treat and absolutely delicious with a cup of coffee or tea or hot chocolate or whatever it is that you prefer. As a South African I have had milk tart many many times in my life this, however, is a particularly good recipe and, having made it yesterday, it has now replaced the recipe I have been using for years. Well done Deborah Widdows! And thank you for sharing your recipe!
