Tuxedo Strawberries
Ingredients
- 18 medium fresh strawberries, with leaves left on
- 1 cup (6 ounces) vanilla chips
- 3 1/2 teaspoons shortening, divided
- 1 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Pastry bag or small heavy-duty resealable plastic bag
- #2 pastry tip, optional
Instructions
Line a tray or baking sheet with waxed paper; set aside. Wash strawberries and pat dry. In the top of a double boiler over simmering water, melt vanilla chips and 1 1/2 tsp. shortening. Dip each strawberry until 2/3 is coated, making the shirt, allowing excess to drip off. Place on the prepared tray; chill 30 minutes or until set. Melt chocolate chips and remaining shortening in a double boiler. To form the jacket, dip each side of the strawberry into chocolate from tip of the strawberry to top of vanilla coating. Repeat on the other side leaving a V in the center. Set aside remaining chocolate. Chill berries 30 minutes or until set. Remelt reserved chocolate. If using a plastic bag, cut a small hole in the bottom corner. Insert pastry tip if desired or you may pipe directly from the bag. Fill bag with the melted chocolate. Pipe a bow tie at the top of the V and 2 or 3 buttons down the front of the shirt. Chill for 30 minutes or until set. Completed berries may be stored in the refrigerator in a covered plastic container for 1 day. Yield 18 berries.
