Advocaat (Dutch Eggnog)

Use this quick and easy drink recipe to make a thick, custard-like drink that is immensely popular in Holland. Sometimes as thick as yogurt, Advocaat is a tasty beverage that can be enjoyed as a Christmas eggnog recipe or as a year-round recipe.

Notes

Advocaat is served in a glass and eaten with a teaspoon. It can also be topped with whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 10 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 10 ounces sugar
  • 1 3/4 cup cognac
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Separate the eggs and beat the yolks with the salt and the sugar, until the mixture is thick and creamy.
     
  2. Beat in the cognac, very slowly and put the mixture into a double saucepan.
     
  3. Heat gently, whisking all the time until the advocaat is warm, not hot, and thick.
     
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Pour into a jug.
