NECCO Wafers are a blast from the past that taste just as good as I remember them tasting when my grandma used to give them to me as a special treat. Until recently, I had no idea NECCO candies came in tropical flavors! The tropical wafers are a perfect summer treat to keep in your purse or bag when you walk around town. With coconut, passion fruit, strawberry, lime, banana, and mango flavors, their vibrant taste is something I don't usually expect from a hard candy.
Before even opening the roll, I could smell the fruity flavors through the paper! These candies are just sweet enough to satisfy my sugar craving, which usually comes about five times per day. If I want to chew on something sweet during the day, keeping a roll of NECCOs at my desk would definitely be a great snack. I love that there are 6 different fruity flavors, so each wafer is a change from the last. Lime is my favorite flavor - it's not too intense, but still has the refreshing and sweet taste of lime.
If you've ever had Sweethearts, the conversation heart candies given out near Valentine's Day, these wafers have a similar consistency. They're not quite a hard candy, but hard enough to create a crunch when you bite into them. If you look forward to the taste of those hearts every February, these wafers are the summer version!
The New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) first got its start in 1847. Ever since, NECCO wafers have gotten more and more popular. Did you know, during WWII, American soldiers were given the wafers because they didn't melt and rarely broke during transportation? Today, approximately 630 million NECCO wafers are made each year! If they're placed edge to edge, they would go around the world twice. Pretty cool, huh?
With this delicious tropical flavor, in addition to their traditional and chocolate flavors, it's no wonder these candies are in such high demand. If you're a daydreamer like me, feel free to imagine yourself under a palm tree somewhere when you break out a roll of these wafers. Although they taste perfect for summer, I'm going to want to keep these for winter, just to put some sunshine in my day.
