When I was in Venezuela I learned how to make Arepas and we dry fried them in a cast iron skillet. They looked like a hamburger patty as they were formed. When they were toasted medium brown we then split them, took out the insides and added butter and pepper and sometimes cheese and ate with our fingers, The arepa was then filled with a slice of cheese and meat for a hand held sandwich. From what I learned this was a cultural sandwich for the poor workers in the country, but now it is enjoyed everywhere and they even have Arepa stands so you can buy them by the dozen. YUM!!
