Michigan's Apple Bars
With a corn flake bottom and a top layer of cinnamon apples, this dessert bar recipe is magnificent. These are a great little treat that the family will love. Why bake an apple pie when you can make Michigan's Apple Bars?
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 egg, separated
- 2/3 cup milk
- 5 cups apples, thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 2/3 cup corn flake crumbs
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- Water to thin
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in shortening. Put egg yolk in a measuring cup and add milk to make 2/3 cup. (Set aside egg white for later.)
- Add this to the shortening mix and shape into a ball.
- Divide dough in half and roll out half of the dough. Put in an ungreased jelly roll pan. Top with filling.
- Roll out other half of dough and put on top of filling. Pinch all edges together.
- Beat egg white slightly and brush it on the top crust. Bake until you are sure the apples are done (35 minutes?) and crust is golden.
- For glaze, mix powdered sugar, lemon juice and water well and drizzle over bars as soon as they come from oven. With the back of a spoon, lightly spread the glaze to coat evenly. Glaze while hot.
