Old Fashioned Date Bars
These old fashioned date bars are the perfect dessert to round out any meal, and they transport well. Great to bring go parties or on a picnic.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup pitted dates (8 ounces)
- 1 1/2 cup orange juice
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3/4 cup cold margarine, cut small
- 1 cup flaked coconut
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 1/2 cup quick cooking oats
- powdered sugar, for sprinkling
Instructions
- Cook date and orange juice in a saucepan over medium heat 20-25 minutes, or until thickened, stirring occasionally to break up dates. Remove from heat.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine flour, sugar and butter until coarse crumbs.
- Add coconut, nuts and oats, until just blended.
- Place half the batter in an ungreased 9x13-inc pan. Cover with waxed paper and press flat.
- Spread date/orange juice filling to 1/2" of edges.
- Top with remaining oat mixture and flatten slightly.
- Bake 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Cool on rack. Cut in serving sizes, and sprinkle with the powdered sugar.

I THOUGHT THAT IT REALLY GOOD. FIRST TIME I USED OJ IN IT.br br QUESTION I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTION BOTH TIMES I MADE DATEbr br BARS BUT WHY IS IT SO CRUMBLY. IS IT SUPPOSE TO BE THIS WAYbr br OR WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO STOPTHIS CONDITION.br br THANKS----Susan
