This is a very rich and decadent side dish that tastes sweet like dessert. Sweet potato casserole is a traditional staple at Thanksgiving that would also be appropriate at the Christmas dinner table. The richness comes from the 3 sticks of butter, and the sweetness from the 3 cups of sugar in this recipe. Although it is definitely a splurge for anyone to eat this casserole, during the holidays it is almost a requirement to savor the goodness of comfort food, such as sweet potatoes.
