    Awesome Baked Macaroni and Cheese

    Who doesn't love mac and cheese? Check out this awesome baked macaroni and cheese, it's easy and full of flavor. At my house this is voted as the recipe for the best macaroni and cheese dish.

    Ingredients

    • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons minced yellow onion
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 1/8 teaspoon turmeric
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • 1/8 teaspoon salt
    • 2 cups milk
    • 10 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, grated (one stick of Cracker Barrel Extra Sharp)
    • 1/2 cup crushed croutons or bread crumbs

    Instructions

    1. Cook the macaroni (bring 2 quarts of water to boiling, add 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, add macaroni, return to boiling, boil about 8 minutes).
       
    2. Drain. In a saucepan, melt butter.
       
    3. Add minced onion and saute until slightly golden.
       
    4. Add spices and flour.
       
    5. Cook mixture until thick, smooth and bubbly.
       
    6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
       
    7. Add milk and cook over medium-high heat for about 8 minutes until thickened.
       
    8. Add grated cheese and stir until melted. Pour over cooked macaroni. Mix well.
       
    9. Pour macaroni and cheese sauce mixture into a 2-quart baking dish.
       
    10. Top with bread crumbs.
       
    11. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 25 minutes, or until browned on top.

    This is an interesting variation on macaroni and cheese. I noticed turmeric listed in the ingredients. This is an ingredient in curry powder. Perhaps this dish is slightly spicy? The amount required is very minute so it probably isn't.
