Instructions

  1. First, use half the butter to sautee the onions until transluscent.

  2. Add the other half of the butter then the flour to make the roux, mixing constantly until golden brown. The best way to make a good roux is to use a whisk and make sure the butter does not burn.

  3. Then, add the water and bouillon and continue to whisk until desired color and consistency. Continuous stirring is needed to prevent lumps from forming. Add black pepper to taste.

  4. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook until thickened.

As much as I hate to admit it...KFC probably has the best gravy I've ever eaten but can it really be this simple to make? I'm a little curious though, why are both chicken and beef bouillon used? Isn't it more like a beef gravy? Another question is with the onion in the gravy does it cause it to have lumps or does it blend into the gravy and is just for flavor purposes?

KFC has one of my favorite gravies. I always like to order extra so that my family can dip their biscuits into it. First I have to say that this recipe was super easy. It was easy to follow, and get the consistency of the gravy just like you get at KFC. Second, this gravy is delicious. I made Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and biscuits, and the gravy completed the meal. It was almost like I had ordered KFC, but better, because it was homemade.

I always remember when my daughter was a little girl how she loved KFC's mash 'n gravy. When we got kiddies meals we always had to substitute the chips with mash 'n gravy. When I saw this recipe I knew I had to make some of this. She is coming to visit me this weekend and I'm going to make it to surprise her and take her back to her childhood. I'm so excited.

I first tried this recipe last year, the first time I'd ever made homemade gravy from scratch, and it was awesome! Only difference was I completely omitted the chicken bouillon, which gave it more of a brown gravy flavor. The awesome thing about this gravy recipe is that it's very easy to switch up flavors, adding more beef or chicken flavor, or even finding delicious new flavor combinations!
