I love simple Amish recipes especially from one of our favorite blogs, Amish 365. The Amish Cooks Across America Cookbook is Kevin William's latest Amish-inspired cookbook and it is filled with fascinating history and delicious recipes to enjoy.
The beginning of the cookbook has an introduction into the history of Amish cooking. I loved learning about the development Amish recipes over time. I also liked that it explained some of the differences between Amish communities like the Hutterites and Mennonites.
I absolutely loved the way the book is broken up into different areas of the country. Since Amish recipes vary across different communities, it makes the most sense to go by geography. Included in each chapter is a breakdown of each community with history, as well as interesting notes about their culture. Each community then has a couple of recipes that are featured.
The cookbook has a variety of recipes, from snacks to desserts, and even one on how to make soap! Some of my favorite recipes included, the Rivel Soap (pg. 89), Southern Gal Biscuits (pg. 109), and Homemade Blackberry Cake (pg. 141). I liked that there is a nice mix between exotic recipes and more well-known recipes.
If you are interested in learning more about the Amish or just love country cooking, this is the cookbook for you. It makes a great gift for anyone in your life who loves to cook.
