Crispy Tobacco Onions
"Tobacco onions are called ‘tobacco’ due to their colour and curly appearance similar to dried tobacco leaves. I first had them a couple of years ago in a lovely restaurant in New Forest, England. A little suspicious first (tobacco? do they actually soak baccy leaves and then chuck in onions for flavour? or do they smoke lots of ciggies in the kitchen while frying onions?), they had me at first bite. There weren’t too many bites to follow because my companion took care of most of the bowl. My recipe – a little bit of fuss cause of deep frying, but SO WORTH IT. They go best with steak, chops and burgers – but you might just polish them on their own given a chance."

This sounds interesting. I'd never heard of Tobacco Onions before, but I'm a huge connoisseur of onion rings, and this recipe looked like something I'd be more than willing to try. I'm curious to compare these homemade ones to the commercially available french-fried onions. I think they'd be really good with a dipping sauce of some sort, especially if the spice amounts are increased.
